A BARDS TALE: Session 8: "Into the unknown.....!" or "You can't see in a white out".

 25/7/23

18th & 19th Day of Rainmoot: 1492

Mission:  Find Our Lady's Heart

Campaign:  Tales from the Bard

Location(s):  Mere, Barovia

Present: Bernadette Greycastle, Dramos Ethrane, Niall Tharivol, Ragul-Nur, Roscoe Tosscoble, Moonwhisper , Plus Mule.

18th
On their way to the inn, the village lightly shrouded in mist they could see a small group of travelling wagons, each wagon was enclosed, a dwelling, the Vistani were here. Roscoe was excited for they were great fortune tellers. He berated the group to have their fortunes told. They reluctantly agreed.

As they approached the wagons a curtain was pulled back at the rear of one. A woman's voice called.

Woman: "I foresaw your coming, now come for what I have to tell you effects you all collectively not 1 individual. I am Madam Eva"

The group climbed up the 4 steps and into the rear of the enclosed wagon.

They sat around a table and the woman produced a deck of cards and laid 5 cards out.

Madam Eva: "The cards are presented. The future will be revealed. Nothing can be changed."

Madam Eva: "Ah, The Beggar. This card tells of history, knowledge of the ancient will help you better understand your enemy. A wounded Elf has what you seek. He will part with the treasure to see his dark dreams fulfilled.."

Madam Eva: "Ah, The Myrmidon. This is a powerful artifact. A force for good and protection, a symbol most holy to bring great hope. look for a den of wolves in the hills overlooking a mountain lake. The treasure belongs to Mother Night."

Madam Eva: "The Abjurer. This is a card of power and of strength. It foretells a weapon of vengeance, a sword of sunlight. I see a fallen house guarded by a great stone dragon - look to the highest peak!"

Madam Eva: "The broken one, ahh. This card sheds light on one who may assist you greatly in the battle against darkness. I see a man of faith who's sanity hangs by a thread. He has lost someone close to him."

Madam Eva: "The Tempter, for surely he is. I see a secret place - a vault of temptation hidden behind a woman of great beauty. The evil awaits atop his tower of treasure."

Returning to the inn they spent the night listening to another Roscoe rendition of some forgotten king who died in some forgotten battle in some forgotten kingdom centuries ago.

19th
The next day they discussed their options. They decided to head back over the trail and try and pick up Talila's tracks and find her. They gathered their equipment bade Roscoe's cousin farewell and left the village.

The mist was closing in. It was about 150yds away. Ragul-Nur, at the rear, looked back and spotted a figure darting out of the mist and hiding behind a large rock. He kept a careful eye as the group progressed. He saw the figure again and warned the group they were being followed.

Niall: "Ok, we see you, friend or foe, come out where we can see you".

The figure stood up, dressed in black leather, hand on the hilt of the slender rapier dangling from her belt, a short bow slung over her shoulder.

Bernadette: "My name is Bernadette Greycastle I mean no harm. I overheard you talking about Talila last night. She and I are.......accomplices.........partners........friends. We were supposed to meet in Mere but she failed to show. You have met her, were off to look for her, I followed. Now this damn mist has forced my hand and I had to travel a lot closer to keep you in sight. I would like to join you to find Talila."

The group had a quick talk, they thought Bernadette could handle herself but she was an unknown. They decided she could but they would keep an eye on her.

Ragul: "Hate to tell you this but whilst we've been chatting.......look, look how close the mist is now!"

The mist had closed in and was all of 20ft away from the group. They proceeded with caution but soon the mist enveloped them all and they had to close right up to see the person in front.

Suddenly the mist in front parted. They now stood on a forest trail. Dark pools of water lay on the path, the giant trees clawed at each other in the mist. There had been no trees for miles, Abbadon Forest was miles away. The trees looked oppressive, dark, the mist could be seen to right and left and behind.

Bernadette: "Looks like the 'mist' wants us to go forward."

Ragul had ben  muttering to himself as they walked slowly, he looked up and addressed no one in particular.

Ragul: "This is of spiritual making, not inherently evil as such but it is definitely not and I mean not natural fog!"

They walked for about 5 miles, Niall roughly worked out, keeping a silent count of steps as they walked. The fog spilled out of the trees to cover the road behind them. Ahead jutting out from the impenetrable forest stood gates. The gates were rusty, old and the two guardian statues either side were headless, their heads laying in the undergrowth at the base of the statues. Some 5 miles on they arrived before a set of gates. Bernadette used her talents to investigate the gates. They are rusty, old but not locked nor trapped.

Bernadette moved her hand to open the gates but before her palm made contact the gates parted, they creaked and groaned then clanged fully open. She led the group slowly through. The trees either side of the gates were thick and definitely impenetrable. The gates were the only way through that they could see.

Bernadette stopped, the group moved equally to right and left, each pair slightly behind and to the side of the one in front. Moonwhisper called it 'arrowhead',  for the formation looked like the head of an arrow and allowed the group a clear view ahead and to the side they were on.

Bernadette: "I can see a figure, tall, human like, leading a horse, they are coming right towards us up the pathway".

Weapons were drawn in readiness to repel an attack.

The figure stopped 20ft in front of the group. He was tall and handsome.

Man: "Good day to you, my name is Count Strahd von Zarovich, welcome to Barovia. I see you are ready for trouble, weapons drawn. You need not fear I mean you no harm. It is good to welcome new blood to Barovia, we get so few visitors these days. Wait...what is this, such beauty, my dear you look divine. I look forward to getting to know you better during your stay in Barovia. I see you travel with two Elves a Dwarf a Human and a child!"

Roscoe: "I'm a halfling, sir".

Strahd looked the group over and nodded his head. He then looked long and hard at Moonwhisper and Ragul-Nur before speaking again.

Strahd: "I look forward to meeting both of you too. But now I must return to my home. You, tall one in blue, yes you. You remind me of my brother. He once stood tall and proud like you".

Strahd effortlessly mounted his horse. The group were rooted to the spot such was the power in the words von Zarovich spoke.  It was then they noticed the horse for it was no mortal horse it was a Nightmare! He looked over his shoulder and smiled at Bernadette. Then he was gone.

Moonwhisper: "I managed to gain insight into that, that thing. They are both of the Undead, the Unliving."

Ragul: "I fear that is a living Vampire of legends, pun intended".

Roscoe: "What do we know of Vampires, he was scary!"

Ragul: "From what I can remember they are weakened in running water, cannot cross running water, garlic can keep them at bay so too holy symbols. Something about not willingly inviting them into your house, they need to be invited. But they feed on the blood of the living to prolong their undead lives. They also fear and shun sunlight."

Moonwhisper: "Well it's daylight, overcast yes, but day light. Why could he survive that?"

Ragul: "Daylight is not sunlight, have you noticed, there is no sun, so no sun light."

The group shook themselves and continued along the pathway. Niall suddenly stopped. They had gone no more than a mile!

Niall told the others to wait and he stepped off the path into the woods. He returned a short while later. He told them he had found a body. Ragul and Bernadette went with Niall to investigate further. Ragul turned the body over. It was obvious the body had ben dead for several days. The human male had been raked by claws, his chest exposed and his intestines bulged out of multiple wounds. The wounds were infested with maggots. Clutched in his hand was a letter. Bernadette retrieved the letter and opened it, she read it aloud:

They were in the process of burning the body when they heard a shout of alarm from the others still on the pathway. Roscoe was being assailed by a very large wolf. A 2nd wolf was charging in as Niall stepped away from the burning body and moved to intercept the charging wolf both swords drawn ready to strike.

Bernadette saw movement to her front, crouching down behind a bush she pointed in the direction and Moonwhisper moved to her side.

Before they could react 2 more large wolves charged into Bernadette and Moonwhisper, a 3rd hit Ragul as Niall defended against the wolf attacking him.

The fight was confused, the only one of the group not taking damage was Dramos. Fire bolts and spiritual weapons aided the defence. Niall dropped a sword and mucked up a counter strike spell. Bernadette and Moonwhisper killed a wolf between them, Roscoe managed to fight off and kill the wolf attacking him.

The wolves suddenly ran off into the mist.

Niall looked up the pathway and saw von Zarovich on his nightmare just looking at them. von Zarovich turned his mount and calmly rode away.

The group healed their wounds.

Roscoe: "They were big and I mean big wolves".

Dramos: "Anything is big to you Roscoe but those weren't ordinary wolves, they were Dire Wolves!"

Niall: "Zarovich was there, he pointed down the pathway, I saw him before he rode away. DO you think he had something to do with this?"

Moonwhisper: "Undoubtably".

A few miles further on they came to a rise. Below lay a small village and above it, on a high pinnacle of rock, a dark foreboding castle.

It was nearing mid-day, or as near as they could reckon, when they entered the village. At first it seemed dark, claustrophobic, as tall shapes loomed out of the gloom. The muddy, wet ground of the pathway gave way to the slick, wet cobblestones of the village. The windows of the dark buildings seemed to stare out from pools of blackness.

Dramos: "Strange, no lights. Is anyone at home, do you think?"

No one answered.

The only sound that disturbed the deathly silence was the distant sound of someone sobbing, a mournful soul penetrating sob that dampened the spirits of the group.

Turning a corner they observed a light down a long cobbled street. They proceeded in that direction and came into a square.  The light came from a tavern, a broken sign swung in the breeze indicating the name of the tavern was The Blood of the Vine.

Moonwhisper indicated there was no inherent indications that evil lay withing. The few customers all turned to stare as the group entered. Around the fire sat two villagers at a round table sat three Vistani. The Vistani kept their heads lowered but one could be seen trying not to be noticed taking an interest in the new arrivals.

A solitary man sat and beckoned them over. He introduced himself as Ismark and he would like to buy them a drink or two and a meal.

Ismark: "The beer is passable, the wine a little better but they do make a nice meat pie with gravy".

Ragul was already sat down indicating beer and pie for him.

The bartender shuffled over, his pallor was grey, his attitude sombre and quiet. He laid the drinks down and the food. He took to cleaning glasses and once finished he started cleaning the same glasses again.

Ismark leaned in and whispered so as not to be overheard by anyone else.

Ismark: "I need your help. I need your help to protect my adoptive sister Ireena Kolyana. I can't tell you more but I will take you somewhere that is quieter where we can talk freely. Will you help".

The last bit was almost a plea.

They had two more drinks and finished their pie and gravy before agreeing. They left the tavern and headed down a street running south. Bernadette peeled off and slid into the shadows as the group passed a mercantile business called Bildraths Mercantile. A second building with a light on she noted.

It wasn't long before the tavern door opened and a figure, a Vistani, stood in the open doorway looking in the direction of the group walking down the road. Once the group had passed out of his sight, the Vistani went back inside the tavern and closed the door.

Bernadette caught the group up and told them what she had seen. The sobbing they had heard when entering the village was now louder. It became louder the closer they got to a house on their left.

Ismark refused to comment on who or what was making the sobbing noise and pressed onwards. It wasn't long before they stood before a weary looking mansion standing behind a rusting iron fence. The right gate cast aside of its hinges the left swinging and creaking in the breeze. As they walked up towards the house they could see weeds pressed the ground and spread with menace right up to the house. Yet wen they got to the house they could see a well worn path around the building, the weeds worn flat. They could also see claw marks all over the front façade that had pulled the once ornate coverings off. Not a window stood in any of the frames. The windows were all boarded up from the outside.

Moonwhisper again announced that he could detect no evil presence in the house, although the building was too large for him to confirm that it was all free of evil.

When they entered they were greeted by a beautiful young woman.

Ireena: "Oh Ismark I was worried."

Ismark: "I'm fine, these people have agreed to help."

Ireena: "Welcome, make yourselves at home".

Niall: "Thank you".

Ireena led them into a dinning room. The rooms they passed through were expensively decorated and furnished. As they entered the dinning room, there on the floor was a wooden coffin. Within a body.

Ireena: "My father, although I'm adopted he was my father."

Ismark told the group that Strahd had visited Ireena twice, she had bite marks on her neck. Ireena could not remember much, it was fuzzy, all she could remember were Strahd's eyes, piercing hypnotic eyes. Ismark said Ireena needed to be moved away from Barovia. A third visit from Strahd would be fatal. Ismark brought out a map of Barovia and laid it down on the table. The town of Vallaki would be the best as the village of Krezk was too far.

Ireena: "Ismark, brother, I will not go anywhere whilst father lies unburied. We must take him to the graveyard, find the priest Donavich. He will make sure the correct prayers are said and their father interred correctly. Only then would I agree to leave."

The house of the Burgomaster

Dramos: "I make it just passed midday.

Ismark: "Time is of the essence, Strahd seems distracted, now is the time to get Ireena out of Barovia."

A BARDS TALE - Session 7: "When is a cow not a cow....." or "Doris is missing, oh me, oh my!.....".

 18/7/23

18th Day of Rainmoot: 1492

Mission:  Find Our Lady's Heart

Campaign:  Tales from the Bard

Location(s)Mere, Forest of Abbadon

Present: Dramos Ethrane, Niall Tharivol, Ragul-Nur, (Roscoe Tosscoble), Moonwhisper , Plus Mule.

They watched the large tax collection convoy depart. Some 15 barbarians and 10 Gnolls were the escort, along with the large Half-Orc. The children waved as the wagon departed.

Ragul: "Pub?"

Roscoe: "Pub."

Niall: "And don't start any fights this time".

Moonwhisper: "Then tomorrow we can get back on the original task".

No one answered him.

18th
It was a long night in the tavern. The group falling asleep late, or early in the morning. As they sat down they started discussing what they were intending to do.
1. Track Talila.
2. Join the mercenaries in Gulluvia.
3. See if there was anything needed doing around the village.

As breakfast was kindly delivered by the owners wife, and as the tavern started to fill up, the door burst open.

Farmer: "She's gone, she's gone, she's been taken in the night!"

Customer: "Who's gone Jedidiah, who?"

Jedidiah: "My Doris, she's gone, gone. What shall I do?"

Niall: "Take it easy Jedidiah I'm sure your wife is not far, has she not wandered out to feed some of your livestock?"

The locals all started laughing at Niall. Jedidiah looked fit to burst.

Jedidiah: "Doris is not my wife, Doris is my prize milking cow, she provides milk for half the village. What am I to do?"

Dramos: "We are nearly finished our breakfast, we can help you look. Where is your farm?".

Directions given withing half an hour the group had arrived at Jedediah's, with the exception of Roscoe, he was still eating.

Niall was directed to the barn and although he searched he could find no tracks. The barn door was not forced as it was not padlocked. A simple bar acted as a lock.

Inside the barn it was easy to work out which stall was Doris's. Again Niall looked but could not find anything.

Niall: "Look the ground outside is hard, in here it is softer but I cannot find.......wait a minute..."

Niall bent over in the far corner. He had spotted something and as he moved some straw revealed a fresh cow platte that had a foot print int it, a heavy shod, slightly larger than human footprint. Ragul looking over his shoulder said:

Ragul: "Looks like an Orc footprint to me!"

Niall: "Just what I was going to say, Orcs!"

Moonwhisper: "Then what are we waiting for, lets get them and the cow and get back on with our task".

Outside Niall extended his search and found a track.

Niall: "Single Orc, leading the cow that way, towards the forest of Abbadon!"

Ragul: You mean that scary place Roscoe kept telling us about, pah old wives tales."

They set off at a steady pace but Niall, although he said they were gaining, had lost the trail.

Niall: "Found it. However the one Orc is now nine Orcs! Are we still heading after them, can we take on 9 Orcs?"

Moonwhisper: "If we are careful and we don't just run headlong into them, I am sure we can".

As they continued a mist was forming. The further they went the mist thickened. An arrow streaked out of the ist and narrowly missed Niall.

Niall: "They must be close, try to keep within sight of each other,"

They moved forward cautiously now, fearing an ambush. Ragul told Dramos to tie an end of his 50ft rope around his waist whilst he held on to the other end.

Niall spotted an Orc hiding behind a tree. He charged forward. Then all hell was let loose as those others moved forward. Arrows came out of the mist from all directions. The Orcs let loose a volley of arrows then charged in.

The fight was confused  and desperate in the mist. Niall was fighting one, then two Orcs. The others fought Orcs. Then there were 6 dead Orcs and just as they were having a breather another 2 Orcs and 1 larger Orc charged into the flank of the group. This fight was harder the leader fought on to the end. The remaining Orc threw down his weapons and held his hands out. Niall and Ragul asked some brisk questions. The Orc answered to the best of his knowledge. Niall was happy he had told the truth. He had found out that the Screaming Skull Clan, whom he sought, were now in Murann and the Orc King's bodyguard Clan.

Moonwhisper was down and badly injured from the fight. The group pooled healing and brought him back from the brink of death.

The cow was found tethered to a tree. Exactly where the Orc prisoner had said it was. True to his word Niall cut the rope binding the Orc and told him he was free o go, without his weapons.

After resting awhile they continued onwards, Ragul leading the cow, Niall leading as best he could in the mist. Moonwhisper came 2nd followed by Dramos.

Niall scouted forward but always in sight of Moonwhisper. After a few hours he stopped. There was a stream and a ford. On the other side of the ford sat 4 very large humanoid creatures facing each other in a rough circle.

Niall: "Ogres, lets not stir them."

He waved the others forward. They conversed and decided to head south on this side of the stream hoping it was the stream that ran through Mere.

As they moved off one of the Ogres crossed the stream an thrust a bag into Ragul's chest and pointed at the cow. Ragul shook his head. The Ogre again pushed the bag into his chest and grabbed the rope with his other hand and pulled. As he did this a second Ogre crossed the ford. At that point Niall let fly an arrow he had knocked and it thudded into its chest The other Ogres stood up and threw javelins towards the group.

Moonwhisper closed with the Ogre as Ragul was slapped by the 1st and landed in a heap. The fight spread out on both sides of the stream. Moonwhisper took a heavy blow and went down as Dramos and Niall finished off the 2nd Ogre. Ragul regained his feet and launched into an attack on the 1st Ogre. It took a combined effort to bring the 1st Ogre down but then it was quiet, something had spooked the other 2 Ogres as they could be heard running away!

Again they had to heal Moonwhisper who was close to death yet again. They followed the stream south and before night fall arrived back in the village. They handed 'Doris' over to the farmer who was extremely grateful.

They gathered their equipment bade Roscoe's cousin farewell and left the village. They had been traveling for no more than 2 hours when the thick, heavy, oppressive mist descended and surrounded them. Disorientated they managed to stay together. They could not evaluate their progress as they had nothing to anchor their sight on. It seemed like they were walking on a treadmill.

Suddenly the mists parted, looking around all was grey. Although the sky was light, it was grey, no hint of the sun. The forest either side of the road seemed oppressive.

Looking into the distance they could see...............................

A BARDS TALE - Session 6: "One step forward, two steps back....." or "How much Tax? Here have it in bit coin!......".

 11/7/23

17th Day of Rainmoot: 1492

Mission:  Find Our Lady's Heart

Campaign:  Tales from the Bard

Location(s):  AMN: Small Teeth Mountains, Goblin Hideout, Mere.

Present: Dramos Ethrane, Niall Tharivol, Ragul-Nur, Roscoe Tosscoble, Moonwhisper & (Talila Watercup), Plus Mule and 2 children.

17th:                                                                                                                                      Talila stood her watch, 3rd of 4. Moonwhisper would follow her for the last guard. Niall and Moonwhisper having already gone before. Talila hummed and thought. Thought and hummed. Enough, she said to herself. She carefully picked up her things, crept to the closed door and opened it. She slid through quiet as a mouse. She went no more than 2 steps before turning back. Although she had decided to leave she could not leave the others with an open door that could cause unknown troubles.

Using her roguish skills she devised a way to close the sliding bar latch and secure the door behind her. She made good her journey and left no tracks for the others to follow. She was late and this delay had cost her.

BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG!

BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG!

Voice: "What's keeping you. You must have seen us coming. We 'aint got all day?"

Moonwhisper was awake. What's that banging he thought. Then he realised, someone or something was banging on the door.

Moonwhisper: "Get up, get up, we've got company and I don't think it's friendly."

The others opened their eyes to see Moonwhisper donning armour and weapons as fast as he could. Then the banging noise registered and they too scuttled around arming and armouring themselves for what was to come.

BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG!

BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG!

Voice: "Come on. What's keeping you. Sleeping off a heavy night.? Well we 'aint got all day?"

Niall crossed the corridor as an arrow slammed into his side.

Voice: "Oops, sorry, but hey aint that an Elf I just hit........by mistake".

Loud raucous laughter followed.

Ragul, realising they were speaking Goblin dashed around the corner and into the corridor opposite Niall. He looked at Niall, who nodded his head to indicate he was ok. Ragul shouted in Goblin.

Ragul: " Oi, enough of that malarky, you'll have some ones eye out."

Voice: "Then open the bloody door and hand over the packages, ew got a long journey ahead and we're burning daylight"."

Ragul kept low as he hurried to the door and began making noises as though he was trying to open it, whilst keeping out of sight of the open hatch.

Ragul: " Having trouble opening this damn lock, its jammed!"

He then began to kick the door again.

Voice: "Look, you got 5 minutes then we're off an' you get no payment. You can explain the why's and where fore's later".

Ragul heard footsteps receding as the 'voice' went back down the steps. Moonwhisper came up the steps and was about to shout out when Ragul shushed him and beckoned him closer.

Ragul and Niall went with Moonwhisper back to the others. They quickly briefed the others as to what had happened. By the time Niall had taken up the watch position and Moonwhisper and Ragul were on the other side all they could see was a wagon with a large circular tent on the back trundling off over the small rise.

Niall: "Shit, they've gone. Quick gather the others I'll try and see which way they're headed."

Ragul and Moonwhisper went back and gathered the others. By the time they found Niall he was studying the ground.

Niall: "I've searched all around, there is no trace of Talila. Either she's been taken by the 'visitors', unlikely, or she's gone off on her own, more likely. Any way it's a good hour to the old Dwarven road and the wagon tracks are easy to follow.

They followed the wagon tracks to the Old Dwarven Road. It was obvious by the signs that the wagon had come from the east, travelled to the hideout and had left heading west. A long discussion followed about what to do.

1. Take the children to the capital town Gulluvia.

2. Take the children with them and follow the wagon.

3. Take the children back to Mere.

It was decided to head back to Mere as it was the closest friendly habitation they knew. It would take them the rest of the day but Moonwhisper spurred them on and they made excellent time arriving at Mere in the late afternoon, early evening. During the journey Ragul had fashioned two 'charms' for the children. Both depicted the same thing, the holy symbol of Moradin. He had put a small hole in each and attached the charm to a piece of string. He gave gave one each to the children, fashioned out of a silver piece.

As they approached the village Niall could see quite a bit of activity ahead. He called a halt.

There were armed people on the far side of the small stream watching them. Niall looked back and said:

Niall: "Humans and Gnoll's, don't know what is going on but they don't look menacing."

A guard had spoken to someone behind him. A Half-Orc then joined the group by the crossing.
He was tall, unshaven but no beard, he carried a double bladed axe resting effortlessly over his shoulder, his shield hung down by his side. Niall was under no illusion that this was fighter and a potentially dangerous opponent should things go sideways.

Moonwhisper: "Let's not provoke them, tell them we've been here before and we are friends. Keep weapons close but not in hand".

The large Half-Orc beckoned then closer.

Half-Orc: "State your business".

Niall: "Hail, we are returning back to the village to meet our friend, the blacksmith Toby Tosscoble".

Roscoe: "Looks like one of the 3 yearly tax collections, see the towns folk lined up and paying their taxes at the table, every 4 months the people of Gulluvia pay taxes".

Niall led the group over the stream.

Half-Orc: "Of course now you are here you can pay your taxes."

Niall: "We are not residents of Mere, nor of Gulluvia, we don't pay taxes. We have journeyed here because we heard there was a need for swords to fight the Orc invasion."

Half-Orc: "Ah, volunteers for the mercenary army. That's what I like to see. Well you can sign up here and journey with us back to Gulluvia. Pay is 5 silver a day."

Niall tried to maintain a semblance of diplomacy.

Niall: "That we may well do, in time, but we will stay here a while and journey to Gulluvia later in the 10 day."

Half-Orc: "Then.....my friend.....you will have to pay your taxes. Join the queue, move along."

The Half-Orc ignored them after that. They joined to queue. One by one the villagers walked to the table, where a well dressed man sat. The Half-Orc had resumed his position behind the table. No villager said anything they just paid and walked away.

Tax Collector: "My name is Baron D'Elandre, you may not know it but I command in Velders. Now that will be 4 pieces of gold please."

The Baron repeated the same sentence as each person paid their taxes. And Once they had paid...

Baron: "The Lady D'Mis, ruler of Gulluvia and protector of the people, thanks you for your contribution that will help pay for your continued protection."

When it was Niall's turn he handed over 4 gold coins. Roscoe followed suit. Dramos handed over 40 pieces of silver and the Baron took his time counting out each piece individually. Ragul handed over 4 gold pieces then Moonwhisper handed over 100 copper pieces and 30 pieces of silver. The Baron looked at him with contempt, Moonwhisper just shrugged his shoulders.

Moonwhisper: "All I have, sorry".

The group turned away but were stopped by a shout.

Half-Orc: "Hey, what about those two halflings, they got to pay up too."

Ragul: "Those aint Halflings, they are orphans. Came across their dead father awhile back, followed the blood trail to a Kobold hideout. We took care of them and their Ogre pet. Fund the children and thought it best to bring them here. We found their mother, she was dead too, and it wasn't pretty".

Half-Orc: "So they are, so they are".

He lifted them down off the mule.

Half-Orc: "Sergeant, take these orphans and put them in the Baron's wagon. (Turning to the group), You done a good deed there. We'll take them to Gulluvia. The Lady D'Hmis will ensure they are given a good home and upbringing. Future assured."

Baron: "Yes, they will b taken good care of, you have my word".

Niall: "Well if we have your word, that's good enough for us."

The others nodded their heads.

PLAYERS INFORMATION:

Old Dwarf Road roughly follows the red dotted border line.

Note: Each hex is roughly 12 miles across.

Stories told in the Pub that night.

Gulluvia: A ruthless place filled with terror, especially to a young halfling like Roscoe.  The Lady D’Hmis rules the barony with a firm and unforgiving hand. To gain supreme rulership of the tiny barony it is rumoured that she poisoned her husband and killed her step-daughter, Argenta.

Dead Mule: A little shire and a  once peaceful place. Named by a group of Dwarven miners who settled here after their only pack mule died. Soldiers often camp outside the shire and do not welcome visitors. No one seems to know why they are here, but the soldiers often terrorise the surrounding area.

N’Sau: This small farming village is so small that there is no inn or tavern. There is a small general store which doubles as a tavern, of sorts, meeting hall and store.

Thorold: This lovely village prides itself on the fact that it breeds the best thoroughbred’s horse in all Gulluvia specifically for the Barony. Appears lawful but is just as chaotic as Gulluvia itself. The mayor is related to the Baroness and follows her laws and orders to the letter. The village is large and boasts 3 taverns, a general store and 2 smithies.

Mere: This tiny village is inhabited by halflings, though Humans, Elves and Dwarves abide here too. The village is also under the protection of Gulluvia, but because of its location, the Baroness has little to do with the village until time to pay its taxes. Which is every 4 months. Escaped prisoners and slaves who make their way here are given aid to enable them to travel northward to Amn. Mereians say nothing of this fearing it would increase the presence of Gulluvian soldiers. The village has 2 taverns, a general store and an inn.

Velders: Under the protection of Gulluvia, though this does Velders little good.  The Gulluvian guards fear the Wealdath Forest to the south. There is a trading post in the centre of town. Orcs and Goblins have been known to raid outlying farms.

Misty Swamp: NO one knows exactly what lies behind the veil of ever present mist that hovers over the swamp. Some old timers say that Dwarves who make Anterian Brandy live in the swamp near their secret ingredient, the swamp water. Others whisper of an evil wizard living there in a massive tower of black stone. The only thing people who live near the swamp will agree on is that most magic users and Elves had best stay clear of it or they will find that their magic spells will not function properly.
