Session 24: "An invitation to dinner....." or "What's the main course.....?"

 21/02/2024

31st day of Rainmoot- 1st Day of Palesun1492

Mission:  Kill Strahd von Zarovich. (After dinner of course, one must observe etiquette).

Campaign:  Tales from the Bard

Location(s):  Barovia, van Richten's Tower, Castle Ravenloft.

Present: Bernadette Greycastle, Dramos Ethrane, Niall Tharivol, Ragul-Nur, Roscoe Tosscoble, Moonwhisper, Bomber Longbeard. Ezmerelda, Rictovio, Father  Danovich & Kasimir Velikov)

31st: (1 night until the full moon)

Ragul was able to gain a new prayer, Remove Curse. He healed himself of the Cursed Treasure curse. Throughout the remainder of this day they laid their plans.

Ragul would have full access to his prayers tomorrow, so too Rictovio. The plan being to cure the 4 bitten members, Moonwhisper, Dramos, Bernadette and Roscoe of the Werewolf Curse.

Rictovio would then cure 3 members of the 5 remaining Treasure Cursed, Moonwhisper, Roscoe and Dramos. Healing prayers would be cast to restore and heal all damage. Bernadette and Niall would still have the Treasure Curse but it was hoped this could be cured after another day.

Ezmerelda had gathered money from everyone and travelled to Vallaki to buy healing potions.

Ragul-Nur would carry the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind and Moonwhisper the Sun Sword. The potions of invulnerability were given to Moonwhisper, Niall, Bomber and Bernadette.

Ragul, Rictovio and Ezmerelda rested, the others had a trouble night.

1st: (Night of the full moon)

Prayers and spells cast, those that could took advantage of a long rest before the journey to Castle Ravenloft.

They took both wagons and left late afternoon after everyone had rested and all preparations were made good. As they passed Vallaki, Kasimir Velikov was standing by the road. Rictovio stopped and he got on the wagon. As they approached the winding road up to the castle, Father Danovich stood waiting for them, he got on board Ezmerelda's wagon. Eleven against the might of Castle Ravenloft.

The journey up the winding road was uneventful. Everyone was deep in their own thoughts.

Rictovio shouted into the wagon, entering the courtyard now.

The wagons stopped. The group exited the wagons and stood in a huddle.

A loud clang came from behind. Turning they could see the way out was now closed by a heavy portcullis.

A voice came from in front of them.

Voice: "My name is Rahadin, chamberlain to my Lord and Master".

Turning they saw a dusk Elf. from Kasimir a loud intake of breath could be heard. Niall forestalled him by placing his hand over Kasimir's as he reached for his sword. If Rahadin noticed Kasimir he did not let on.

Rahadin: "Welcome to Castle Ravenloft. Baron Strahd von Zarovich bids you all welcome and has asked that you join him and his other guests in the dining room. Please follow me".

Rahadin led them into a large, square entrance hallway, similar door to the entrance stood in front of them. They opened as Rahadin waved his hand. As the group followed the main entrance doors closed behind them.

In each corner, high overhead, stood statues of dragons. The main entrance led onto an expansive corridor. To their left an impressive, grand staircase disappeared into the darkness. The main part of this area was octagonal in shape and in pairs stood eight more gargoyle statues.

Another pair of doors stood opposite as Rahadin turned to his right and led the way down a long corridor. At the end off to the left they could just make out a spiral staircase, t their right another pair of doors and immediately opposite stood a suit of armour in a small alcove.

Rahadin indicated the pair of ornate doors and as if by magic they opened. They gazed in amazement at the very ornately decorated room. A long dinning table lay before them and at the far end, dominating the room was an organ, mounted on a raised dais and upon the walls behind it huge metallic pipes for the sound.

Rahadin bid them seat, he then went around the table and asked each member of the group to hand their weapons, shields and large packs over as thy would hinder them at dinner. The items were handed over but not to Rahadin, some invisible force held them above the ground at waist height and transported them over to respective tables behind the guests along each side wall. (Each guest basically had access to a dagger. Moonwhisper had hidden the hilt of the Sun Blade under his clothing, Ragul-Nur had done the same with the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind. Neither of them wanted to antagonise Strahd unnecessarily.

Rahadin then informed them his master, Strahd von Zarovich would join them shortly. It was some 20 minutes before Strahd entered with a beautiful young lady. She sat between Bernadette and ##, Strahd sat at the head of the table with the organ behind him. Strahd bid them all partake of wine and the good food he had to offer. Clapping his hands the doors opened and a young man came in. He did not look towards the guests but Danovich was taken aback, it was his son! They were served a white wine, Danovich downed his straight away and his glass refilled. Bomber just shrugged his shoulders and followed suit. They all noticed that Strahd and the lady were served wine from a different decanter. When poured they could see it was a thick, heavy liquid which was red in colour.

The doors suddenly opened and in walked another beautiful woman, it was Ireena. She bowed to Strahd and sat down at the other end of the table. The other woman present hissed out loud until a word from Strahd quietened her.

Pleasantries were passed, Strahd asked why they had come to Barovia, Niall asked how could they return home. Strahd informed them it was beyond his power to assist them directly. Questions were asked of the Vistani freedom to travel, Strahd informed them that they could because they had saved his life.

Dinner was served, but not by the young man. Each dish seemed to float through the air until it was placed on the long table for the guests to help themselves. The food was deliciously mouth watering. Small talk abounded. The other woman never once looked up from her empty plate. Questions were asked why Strahd and the two woman did not eat anything. Strahd informed them that food did nothing for them, only the special red wine they drank gave them sustenance.

The young man cleared away the empty dishes and on his third journey out of the entrance doors they heard a loud crash and growling. All heads turned in that direction Ireena hurried to stand next to Strahd. Rahadin ran and dropped a wooden beam across the doors to bar entrance to what was outside the room. He retreated next to Strahd. The group rushed for their equipment as loud banging could be heard outside the door as the cross beam of wood bulged inwards.

Bernadette: "They've gone, they're not here!"

Looking around the group could see they were alone. Strahd, Rahadin and the two woman were no longer in the room.

Moonwhisper: "Whatever comes through that door be ready to kill it!"

The doors burst open and 6 wolves rushed in, followed by 3 wolf creatures walking on hind legs, a fourth, larger wolf creature followed.

The wolves attacked first.

Niall, Moonwhisper, Bernadette and Bomber took the brunt of the wolf attack. Ragul moved in to support Moonwhisper and Niall. Roscoe dispatched a wolf as did Moonwhisper, Bernadette and Niall. Roscoe moved in to support Bernadette and Bomber but missed time his spear thrust and merely prodded the wolf with the blunt end, it drew a wry comment from Bernadette.

Bernadette: "Use the pointy end Roscoe.........you might do something more than make it angry!"

Dramos kept up a barrage of cantrip spells until Kasimir stepped into his laine of sight and took the full force of a fire bolt, the effect collapsed him to the floor. Father Danovich cast cure wounds on Kasimir and Moonwhisper giving them valuable aid when needed. The last of the wolves were dealt with as the now unmistakable Werewolves closed in to attack.  Moonwhisper, Ragul and Niall faced off against the Werewolf Lord and another Werewolf as Bomber and Bernadette faced the other 2 Werewolves.

During the fight Bernadette and Niall were bitten! Dramos dispatched a werewolf with a carefully placed chilling touch spell and said to no one in particular:

Dramos: "I don't know why anyone was worried!"

Bernadette efficiently dealt with another Werewolf.

With the minor Werewolves were dispatched. Moonwhisper took 2 mighty blows from the Werewolf Lord as he slammed his clawed fists into the Paladin. Moonwhisper was feeling the effect of the blows but healed himself and struck down with all his might ending the Werewolf Lords part in the fight.

The group took stock. It was then they realised that van Richten and Ezmerelda too had disappeared. They were no longer in the room.

Interim Session Report: "Remember the 7 P's..." or "Curses......damnation...........!"

11/02/2024

30th Day of Rainmoot: 1492

Mission:  Destruction of Strahd von Zarovich.

Campaign:  Tales from the Bard

Location(s):  Barovia, van Richten's Tower.

Present: Bernadette Greycastle, Dramos Ethrane, Niall Tharivol, Ragul-Nur, Roscoe Tosscoble, Moonwhisper, Bomber Longbeard. Ezmerelda and Rictovio.

30th:

Rictovio: "It would seem that we, I mean you  have a problem. The only one not affected would seem to be Bomber here."

Moonwhisper: "Here we go again, more shit to deal with!"

Rictovio: "I have used some of my magical powers to discern that 3 (or 4?) of you have been bitten and are afflicted with the curse of Lycanthropy. Whilst the money you stole from the den......in fact from in front of the 'Wolf Totem' was in itself cursed. Hence why you have not been able to rest and suffered nightmares or bad dreams throughout the night."

Ezmerelda: "Nothing worse than the smell of wet dog!"

Bernadette: "Thanks!"

Moonwhisper: "We're doomed, doomed I tell ya. Nothing has gone right since we arrived in this god forsaken place, nothing!"

Niall: "Easy, easy. Coming here was out of our hands.....it's getting home that worries me. First of all though, Rictovio how do we get rid of or stop or whatever.... these curses?"

Rictovio: "From what I can tell giving the wolf den treasure away or taking it back will not stop that curse. That said, anyone else touching the wolf den treasure will not be afflicted. So we can do some good with it. We have today and tomorrow to figure out the double curse thing.

1. You will not heal or gain back powers without removing the wolf den treasure curse. There are 6 of you affected by this.

2. If we don't figure out the Lycanthrope curse by tomorrow midnight, then I'm afraid those bitten will turn into werewolves. There are 3 (4?) of you affected by this.

3. On the bright side. You have money, we can buy healing potions for you but they will cost.

(1 x 1d4+1 = 50gp - 1 x 2d4+2 potion = 75gp 1 x 3d4+3 = 100gp)

I take it that you, Ragul, are able to learn a new prayer, possibly Cure Curse.  You have enough power to cast this once today? Unfortunately I do not have enough power to cast it myself today.

Tomorrow you could cast it 4 times and I could cast it 3 times. That is 8 cures and we need 9 (or 10!)".

Ragul: "Careful planning I think, careful indeed."

Rictovio: "Oh, we have also received an invitation tomorrow for dinner at Castle Ravenloft".

Session 23a: "It's nearly a Bomber moon......!" or "3 pairs of hands are better than 1".

 31/01/24

29th Day of Rainmoot: 1492 (Pseudo Session)

Mission:  Find the Sun Sword.

Campaign:  Tales from the Bard

Location(s):  Barovia, van Richten's Tower, Argynvostholt

Present: Ezmerelda, Rictovio & Bomber Longbeard.

The others had left yesterday and Ezmerelda had returned. Rictovio and Ezmerelda were planning something, Bomber butted in.

Bomber: "Hey, don't think you're leaving me out of whatever you're planning, I want in".

Rictovio: "Think you can handle it?"

Bomber: "Yes, certainly..........I think".

Ezmerelda: "Let him come, he'll only fret and do something stupid, at least we can keep an eye on him!"

Rictovio: "Ok, but, you do what we say, when we tell you to do it, understand?"

Bomber: "Of course, of course".

The journey by wagon took barely two hours. High above the river valley a quiet promontory jutted out, upon which loomed a sepulchral mansion its turrets capped with fairy tale cones. A third of the structure had collapsed, including part of the roof. The rest of the structure appeared intact. A dark, octagonal tower rose above the dark architecture.

In the fog a bell peeled, followed by the howling of wolves in the woods below. The house remained silent, like the fossilized remains of some long, dead thing, smote upon the hill side.

Perched atop a large crumbling block of granite stood the statue of a dragon. From it's appearance Rictovio spoke to no-one in particular, a Silver Dragon. It's wings tucked close to its body, looking downwards to the east towards the mansion.

Rictovio spoke words of incanted magic and said.

Rictovio: "We are lucky, the magic aura is still there but the magic spell is gone. Otherwise that statue would have  blasted us with a breath trap!"

Entering the mansion Rictovio told Bomber to stay behind them, meaning Ezmerelda and himself.

The room felt like a King's tomb. A grand staircase led up to stone balconies, held aloft by stone pillars and arches.

A tall, faded tapestry depicting a nobleman in sliver armour hung from an old iron rod above the staircase landing.

Six sets of double doors led from this foyer. Along the walls, displayed on marble pedestals, were three alabaster busts of handsome men. A fourth bust and its pedestal had been knocked over. The shattered remains scattered across the floor. Two chandeliers of wrought iron hung from the ceiling like monstrous black spiders.

Ezmerelda: "Enough of this, let me make us invisible, we can move quicker and in safety."

Ezmerelda uttered the incantation and Bomber saw Ezmerelda and Rictovio disappear then he could see them again.

Rictovio: "Ok Bomber you are now invisible, don't attack anything, don't touch anything and watch where we walk".

Bomber nodded his head.

Just in time for as they progressed Rictovio pointed to the ceiling. Giant spiders, to many to count,  moved amongst thick webs stretched from wall to wall. They carefully avoided the threat.

Entering another room (Q6) the unlit fire suddenly burst into flame. They stood still. The flames formed a dragon shape. The shape hissed.......

Dragon: "My knights have fallen into darkness. Save them if you can. Show them the light they have lost".

With that the fire burned out.

Circumventing bedrooms, kitchens stables Ezmerelda led them onwards until at last they came to a room . The west wall of this 50ft long, 30ft wide audience hall has crumbled, leaving a gaping hole and a pile of rubble. Weapons and shields that once hung from the walls have fallen to the floor and succumbed to rust. A large, wooden throne carved to resemble a dragon with unfolded wings faced 3 tall windows to the west. Slumped on the throne was a gaunt, armoured figure with one gauntlet wrapped around the hilt of a once great, great sword, the blade nowhere to be seen.

                                                                    Vladimir Horngaard

Body: "I am Vladimir Horngaard, commander of the fallen Order of the Silver Dragon. I know you are there, even though I cannot see you. If you have come to destroy me, know this: I perished defending this land from evil over four centuries ago, and because of my failure, I am doomed forever. If you destroy this body I shall find another, and another and I will hunt you down. You cannot free me from my damnation, nor would I wish it. If you have come to free this land from the creature that feasts on the blood of the innocent, know this: There is no monster I hate more then Strahd von Zarovich.

He slew Argynvost, broke the life of the knights I once loved, and destroyed the valiant order to which I devoted my life, but Strahd has already died once! He can't be allowed to die again.. Instead , he must suffer in a hell of his own creation, from which he can never escape .Whatever can be done to bring him misery and unrest, I will do, but I will destroy anyone who tries to end his torment.

Rictovio: "My Lord Vladimir Horngaard, I am but a mere servant of the light which ultimately aims to destroy Strahd von Zarovich and his evil minions. Believe me when I tell you we are close to accomplishing this. However you can aid our cause by relinquishing the hilt of the sword in your hand into our keeping. Safe in the knowledge that it will be used to aid us in the destruction of the monster. If I lie then you may seek me out and rest from me my very life and the soul I hold dear."

Vladimir: "Your words speak truth. I shall relinquish the hilt of the Sun Sword into your keeping. Use it well. It's power is not unlimited but it is potent. I ask only one thing. Once destroyed bring back to us the light, bring back the skull of Argynvost and replace it in the beacon tower. Once there my brothers can be released from their torment and seek the peace they crave, will you do this?"

Rictovio: "Upon my word I will. If I should fall then another shall take up the task. If we all fail then you shall know for none shall return and it will fall to others. But I pledge that as long as one of us stand victorious then it shall be done".

Vladimir: "Then the Sun Sword is yours."

Vladimir held out the hilt and Rictovio took possession. As he did so Vladimir seized his hand.

Vladimir: "Do not fail me or you will suffer the same curse as I and my brothers in arms."

Vladimir let go of Rictovio's hand and slumped back on the throne, hands by his side.

Rictovio ushered Ezmerelda and Bomber out of the mansion. On a few occasions narrowly missing traps and Revenants wandering the corridors.

Once outside they got back in the wagon and headed back to the tower.

A BARDS TALE: Session 21-22 & 23: "Once bitten twice shy......." or "Thrice bitten perhaps we'll die.............!"

 18/12/23 & 9/01/24 & 30/01/24

28th - 31st Day of Rainmoot: 1492

Mission:  Find the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind.

Campaign:  Tales from the Bard

Location(s):  Barovia, van Richten's Tower, Tsolenka Pass Pass, Werewolf Den

Present: Bernadette Greycastle, Dramos Ethrane, Niall Tharivol, Ragul-Nur, Roscoe Tosscoble, Moonwhisper, Bomber Longbeard.

28th:

Ezmerelda prompted the group that now might be a good time to return to the safety of van Richtens Tower. As they approached the Tower the sky turned purple and red and a full moon started to peak out of the clouds. A blood curdling howl could be heard in the distance.

The group quickly made their way back to van Richten's tower. The tower was reached by crossing a shoer, grass covered causeway, the tower stood 100 yards from the start of the causeway out into the lake itself. The tower is obviously old. Worn scaffolding holds to one side in which a large gash in the stonework can be seen. Moss covered statues of griffon like creatures adorn the battlements. Ezmerelda led the group past both Ezmerelda's and Richtens wagons.  On arriving Richten invited them inside the tower for the first time and over a meal that night they recalled the days events for Bomber and Richten.

A plan was quickly talked over. Using magical powers to detect object they worked out that the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind lay somewhere along a line roughly to the south of the tower. It was decided that they would travel in Ezmerelda's wagon in a southward direction then take another bearing and roughly work out on a map a possible location of the Holy Symbol.

The group tried to get as much sleep as they could in the cramped area of the ground level of the tower.

29th:
Rising early they travelled in Ezmerelda's wagon southward and took a second bearing. The lines on their map crossed on the far side of Tsolenka Pass. Ezmerelda agreed to take them to the far side of the gate at Tsolenka Pass and would try and return when the group contacted her by a sending spell.

It was a bumpy journey along uneven tracks. After a few hours the wagon stopped. Ezmerelda told them they were some way across the pass. She would try and get back to them when contacted.

The group stood on a narrow track the cliff side was cut away to allow wagons to turn around.  Tall, towering walls were on their right and to the left the ground plunged away into swirling fog.

They walked steadily along the track until they came to a branch to the left. This would lead them in the direction they needed to go. After 30 minutes of a steep uphill walk along the track they came to....a cave entrance. They could hear music, played on a wind instrument quietly coming out of the cave.

At the top of the track the group came across a cave entrance in the shape of a wolfs mouth. The group approached with great stealth. Carefully they entered keeping along both walls. Suddenly 2 wolf /humanoid creatures leapt down from a ledge where they stood guard.

A ferocious fight ensued but the group won out in the end. Both Werewolves lay dead at their feet. They searched the right entrance to a small cave with a pool in the back right and a ledge with boxes on. Opening a box they found lots of clothes, some adult some children's sized. The group moved to the left entrance. No sooner had they entered when they were attacked by 2 more werewolves and 9 wolves. This time the fight did not go all their way and the group took a lot of damage. Moonwhisper, Roscoe, Bernadette and Dramos were all bit. They moved through an are more maze like than cave like but eventually came to two sets of rough hewn steps leading down.

The group found themselves in a larger cavern. Inside were a number of wooden cages. Each had two children in bar 1, it only had a single occupant. The children were quickly released. The single cage occupant gripped a strange doll effigy to his chest. When revealed it had an uncanny resemblance to Moonwhisper. This child told them that he was the strongest and had won the right to join the clan. Seemingly he had had to fight other children to the death for this 'honour'. Moonwhisper inspected the doll effigy. Scratched into the back was written. 'It's no fun, it's no Blinksy'. At the back of the cave stood a 'wolf idol'. Surrounding the idol was a pile of treasure and a small wooden box. The group greedily divided the treasure and in the box they found what they were looking for, The Symbol of Ravenkind.

Having used many magical spells and spiritual prayers, being sorely injured they decided to rest in the cave until morning. Bernadette searched the rest of the cave. A winding passage way, narrow with rough cut steps was found behind a curtain. At the top Bernadette came across what looked to be a fighting arena set inside a stone circle of small stones. Theis was situated on a ledge overlooking the cave mouth. Dramos used a sending to contact Ezmerelda to meet them at the bridge tomorrow. Unfortunately she could not make it there until mid afternoon. The group decided to rest up overnight and leave mid morning.

30th (2 nights until the full moon)
The next morning the group awoke, unrefreshed, still feeling the wounds of yesterdays encounter. Luckily spells and prayers had been cast the night before and some of the damage was repaired. Niall came back into the cave after a short look outside.

Niall: "We'd better get moving fast. It's started to snow and I feel it will only get worse. We need to push on to meet Ezmerelda." It took longer than expected to reach Tsolenka Pass.

Bernadette: "Crap, Ezmerelda didn't tell us about the gate. Do we wait here?"

Dramos: "Yes. She will come".

Niall: Hate to say this but we are going to freeze to death before she gets here. This is going to turn into a blizzard, fast".

Dramos: I'll cast Leomunds hut, it will protect only myself and the children. Go find a way through the gate or find better shelter."

Moonwhisper: "I'll check the gate".

Moonwhisper: "Well, there's a portcullis and a weird green  light covering the exit, two evil devil kind of bird statues on top of the gate and some kind of tower beyond with golden statues on the battlements."

Niall: "I can't find any shelter. Look like the gate is our only answer."

As the group approached the gate the portcullis raised, making an awful scraping, grinding noise, as if by magic. The group waited then the portcullis closed again. Moonwhisper stepped forward and the portcullis raised up, he ushered everyone inside the opening. Once everyone was in the portcullis closed again.

Dramos: "We need to hurry, the children are in a bad way"

Niall took an arrow and thrust it through the green light, nothing happened. Without hesitating Ragul, Bernadette and Roscoe stepped through the wall of green light. Ragul collapsed to the ground just on the other side, Bernadette and Roscoe screamed in agony. Niall quickly tied a rope to an arrow and thrust it through the green light. Bernadette manage to push it through Ragul's belt and Niall and the others pulled Ragul back through the green light. Healing was administered.

Ragul: "It's some kind of force field. Pure agony. We need a safe way through."

Dramos walked up to the green light. Told 4 children to stand with him. He cast Leomunds hut again. Half was on this side of the green light the other half on the other but where it crossed the light the light did not penetrate through. He pushed the children through and told them to stand still. He repeated the spell another twice until everyone was safely through the green light.

The door to the tower was locked and kick and push as they might, they could not get inside. They ran for the bridge and found shelter in the first gateway, two alcoves either side giving shelter form the blizzard blowing fiercely outside.

Huddled together for warmth the waited out the storm which took some 3 hours to abate. Niall stepped outside and could see Ezmerelda's wagon on the far side of the gorge but still a ways off. At Niall's suggestion, as the bridge was in a bad state of repair, they used their combined ropes to rope themselves together. Niall was the only one not roped as he would scout the way over. A shout from behind made him duck down below the parapet of the bridge as he felt his back ripped apart by the talons of a mighty bird that had struck without warning.

Roscoe, leading the children rushed them towards Niall, hoping to get across the bridge before the bird came back. To late, the bird landed in front of him and seized him in it's talons and tried to rise. But the roped weight of the children made it impossible.

Ragul let fly a prayer but struck Moonwhisper, Moonwhisper cast his own spiritual power as did Dramos. Niall struck once with his sword and Roscoe managed a half hearted strike with his spear, still firmly held within the birds mighty talons.

The bird had had enough. The magical hit from Dramos was mighty enough to make it think twice.

Ragul: "First time I've seen a Roc close up. We were lucky."

Moonwhisper: "Yeah, really!"

Ragul: "My apologies, my aim was a little off."

Moonwhisper: "Next time keep it a little more on than off!"

It didn't take the group long to meet up with Ezmerelda. She ushered them into the wagon and before night fell she had deposited them back at the tower. She informed them she was heading to Krezk. They had an orphanage there and were better suited to looking after the children.

Richten: "Looks like you could all do with a rest and some food. I'll be on another level sorting some stuff out. Do not leave this level."

With that Richten climbed a ladder, pulled it up after him and left the group to their own devises.

During the night each member of the group who returned from the werewolf den is haunted by nightmares and dreams that last throughout the night disturbing any chance of resting. Only on waking up do the nightmares and dreams stop.

31st (1 night until full moon)
The next morning the group awoke. They were still sore, wounds had not fully healed.  They looked in a sorry state of health. Goodwill and good fortune seemed to have deserted them.
