Session 128: "The road goes ever onward" or "I am smokin!...."

3rd to 13th Day of Firewane: 1492

Mission:  To Iron Fang Deep.

CampaignFind Karion's missing Father, Einalis Velorna.

Location(s)Alaghon, Iron Fang Deep, Ruins of the Gulthmere Forest.

Present: Anor, Aramil, Bandur, Karion, Paskan

3rd day of Firewane:

The Flying Falcon arrived in Alaghon, they were directed to the elf quarter a herbalist might be found there who could help. There was 1 herbalist who acknowledge he had received a letter by ship that Karion's father intended to visit but first he must travel to Iron Fang Deep. The Deep was an independent Dwarf mountain city, they were aloof and untrustworthy of strangers. However they did like to trade for Aleghon exotic goods.

The group decided to purchase 100 gold pieces of the finest Turmish (Alaghon) goods, head to Iron Fang Deep and trade the goods for information.

4th:

Departing Alaghon they made a quick journey to Nonthal. They managed to arrange passage with a returning merchant, who told them after Nonthal the old Dwarf road would lead them to Iron Fang Deep.

5th to 7th:

The road wasn't hard to follow, there were no significant events and after 3 days they approached an ornate, stone carved entrance to Iron Fang Deep.

8th:

The Dwarves were at first reluctant to let them enter but Bandur came to the fore and after acknowledging his heritage in a lengthy discourse they were allowed entry. The goods were traded for information. Karion's father and the Elven rangers had not made it to Iron Fang Deep. That could only mean they were delayed somewhere along the old forest road from Cedarspoke to the mountains. The group were told they would be blindfolded and taken to the north gate, a safer passage through the mountains. They would then be put onto the forest road before the blindfolds were removed. It would take a full days travel through the mountain to the forest road.

9th:

Their guides left them safely on the road. They were also left 7 days rations each and their water skins were full. The Dwarves told them that the road wasn't difficult to follow and there were marker stones every mile.

The group thanked the Dwarves and then they set off along the road.

10th:

An uneventful day and night.

11th:

They found the remains of the Elven Rangers, they had been nailed to trees beside the road upside down. The symbol of Malar carved into their chests. None of the bodies was Karion's father. Paskan found some tracks and the group decided to follow.

12th:

An uneventful day and night.

13th:

Paskan led the group into a clearing amongst the trees were the outlines of a ruin.

Paskan scouted ahead and the group moved cautiously forward, moving either side of the ziggurat shaped mound.

The group intent on moving forward, were now in a line. Karion cast find object, concentrating on his fathers spell book. He was pulled towards the high ground before them.

Suddenly a pack of wolves burst from cover, Paskan shouting out a warning to late.

Paskan jumped off the ziggurat in between two wolves in the grip of a blood rage. Karion and Anor prepared to defend themselves as Bandur struck from the mound at the wolves below him. A 3rd wolf jumped onto the mound and attacked Paskan from the rear.

Aramil said the words out loud but included the words that would protect anyone caught in the blast from harm other than the wolves. Aramil's fireball erupted around Anor.

Aramil cast colour spray and blinded the wolf attacking him.

Paskan killed two wolves, Anor dispatched another As Bandur and Karion were assailed by the remaining 5.

Just as suddenly as they attacked the wolves dispersed. The group converged on the area that Karion's spell was leading them towards. As they crested the rise they could see a figure chained to a cliff wall. Behind the figure the cliff wall was daubed with the mark of Malar.

The figure lifted his head and recognition swept over Karion, it was his father. Paskan ran forward and using his strength tried to break the chains. He was blasted back by a powerful spell. Karion tried to dispel the magic but again he was blown backwards like Paskan.

Aramil moved forward to heal Paskan as Karion picked himself up.

Karion: "Father...how can we release you?"

Einalis Velorna: "You can't. The full moon rises in 24 hours, time passes quicker here. You must hurry. Go below, find the high priest, get the cure and return before the full moon is at it's highest. It is the only way."

(6pm to Midnight)

Karion's fathers head slumped forward again as he passed out. Bandur soon had the grate open and was leading the group downward. 60ft straight down then a right turn.

Bandur: "We are no heading north......we must move fast for even I can tell that time is slipping away faster than normal".

60 feet further and the stairs opened out onto a 10ft wide corridor. Bandur slowed. The others followed. They had entered a corridor lined with stone sarcophagus.

Bandur entered a room, sarcophagus lined the west wall. The others stood close, Paskan watched the rear.

The moved across the room. Paskan looking backwards shouted out:

Paskan: "Two skeletons are following us, looks like they came out of the sarcophagus!"

Aramil: "I've got this, move on and find the next way we have to go". The others moved down the next corridor. At regular intervals were carved reliefs on the walls. Bandur approached a section to his left and yelled:

Bandur: "I think there is a passage behind this bit of wall to the left".

Aramil prepared to destroy the two skeletons with his prepared spell, Burning Hands.

Aramil: "There's slightly more than 2 but I've got this.....come on you bastards".

Woomph, Aramil let his burning hands spell go and engulfed the leading skeletons.

Bandur broke through the wall and entered another corridor with Anor.

Paskan: "Aramil, come down this corridor and you will see a hole in the wall on the left, we are going through".

Aramil: "I'm a little busy at the moment but ok".

The skeletons attacked Aramil and caused some damage. Aramil uttered the words he knew to his favourite spell and let fly.....WOOMPH....the fireball engulfed most of the room. Paskan and Karion ducked as flames leapt up the corridor towards them. Karion moved up behind Bandur and Anor as Paskan waited for Aramil.

Aramil saw that only 2 skeletons remained of the 16 that were attacking him. Then, ghouls started breaking out of the sarcophagus in the room and shambled forward.

Aramil stepped into the centre of the room. allowing the ghouls and skeletons to surround him. His mage armour and shield were protecting him from most of the attacks as he again uttered the words....

WOOMPH...........another fireball erupted in the room.

Only 3 ghouls remained.

Paskan was in dire straights. After the 2nd fireball the walls either side of the corridor, behind and in front of Paskan burst open and a horde of ghouls shambled towards him.

Anor was struggling to move, sweat pouring down his face. Bandur looked at him but saw the gleam come back into his friends eye and they moved forward to a middle room with spurs either side. Dropping down from the ceiling a Bone Naga launched its attacks. Anor and Bandur the intended victims.

The 3 companions turned and fought the Naga as best they could.

Paskan was surrounded and although he was killing ghouls he was being hit hard.

Paskan raised his shield, looked down and cast Flame Tongue into the ground. The flames blasted outward and although he took damage he killed the ghouls. He quickly killed the last ghoul and stood breathing hard, back to the wall.

Anor, Bandur and Karion were struggling to beat the Naga. Then Bandur through all his might into a tremendous assault and the Bone Naga fell to the ground a pile of bones.

Aramil had been bitten by a ghoul and felt the poison coursing through his veins. He again uttered the words and another fireball engulfed the room.

Aramil staggered up the corridor. Karion ran to his aid. He took out one of his powdered diamonds and sprinkled it over Aramil uttering the words of the prayer to remove the cures of the Ghoul.

Karion led the group to some grates in the floor of the far room. Saying we must go down there next. Bandur spoke quietly but all heard.

Bandur: "I feel the best part of 6 hours have passed since we left your father. We have but 18 hours to save him. Time is distorted for some reason down here".
